Central Catholic High School student earns praise from Rep. Greg Cheney for legislative page service

Luke Fazio, from Ridgefield and a Central Catholic High School student, recently completed a stint as a legislative page in the Washington State House of Representatives. Sponsored by Rep. Greg CheneyR-Battle Ground, Luke’s weeklong service involved active participation in the legislative process and attending Page School.

Cheney commended Luke for his motivation, interest in the political process, and community involvement, stating, “Serving as a legislative page was a great opportunity for Luke to experience state government up close and be part of the process. Our office was honored to have him as part of our team.”

Throughout the week, Luke undertook a variety of responsibilities, including serving House members on the chamber floor, executing the duties of a flag bearer to open a daily House session, assisting constituents and security for member meetings, and participating in the development and presentation of mock bills for consideration during a mock committee meeting.  This comprehensive program provided him with hands-on experience and a classroom component designed to deepen his understanding of the legislative process.

Cheney emphasized the importance of the House page program, stating, “For many students, the Page program leads to a lifetime of engagement in local, state, and even national government. Some things are learned better by doing them. Serving as a House page gives students a distinctive, unique civic education experience that can only be experienced at the Capitol during a legislative session.”

The legislative session provides eight different weekly opportunities for students to participate between January 8 and March 7. Eligible students must be between 14 years old and have not yet reached their 17th birthday. Pages receive a stipend of $65 per day and can earn up to 20 hours of community service.
