Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Workforce issues have been thrust to the forefront of this legislative session as many of our employers are finding it increasingly difficult to hire qualified workers. We must do a better job of offering our students various pathways to successful careers. We also need to ensure that unnecessary bureaucratic red tape is not hindering qualified, willing individuals from entering the workforce.

To address some key licensing issues in our state, I’ve sponsored HB 1358, which establishes certain criteria to be used in determining when, and how, the state should regulate an unlicensed profession.

I’m also sponsoring HB 1359 which requires the Department of Licensing to expedite the professional license of any person licensed and in good standing in another state. As one constituent pointed out to me, “If I am licensed to cut hair in Portland, why should it take so long to get licensed to cut hair in Washington?”

Two other bills I’m sponsoring this session passed unanimously out of committee.

House Bill 1558 creates a separate fund for self-insured pensions and assessments. This has the benefit of both a higher return rate and clearer accounting.

House Bill 1797 will allow licensed real estate appraisers to do evaluations of real property, which are currently allowed to be done by non-appraisers.

I was on Inside Olympia with host Austin Jenkins this week talking about workforce and licensing issues alongside Democratic Rep. Mari Leavitt. You can watch that episode here.

You can also watch my legislative profile video here. I talk about my passion for helping those with mental health issues and my desire to help small businesses grow and succeed.

Survey Results
Earlier this month, my seatmate Rep. Stephanie McClintock and I sent out a postcard with a QR code linking to a short survey. The results of the survey are below.

“Please rank the most important issue for you right now.”

“Do you support the replacement of the I-5 bridge?”

“Do you support legislation to restrict access to firearms?”

Thank you for taking the time to offer your feedback and for staying involved in YOUR state government. If I can ever be of assistance to you, or if you have questions or concerns about legislation, please contact my Olympia office. We are here to serve you.
